giving it a new paint job at the mo.

Datsun 1600 in pieces.
Planned sr20DET.
Bit hard to work on it when it is in NZ.

I am comtemplating buying a 2dr 1600 and doing the engine conversion up here. Would leave it LHD though.
Only problem is the whole sr20 thing has been done to death.

I also have a 460 cu in V8 motorhome that I am converting to RHD.
[quote]
you'd have lots of trouble emissions wise up there wouldn't you? or would you not bother making it road legal while in the US?
[quote]
There are all kinds of ways to get around emissions. The main reason I was thinking about the datto is because it would be pre smog, I think another before 74/75 is fine. So an RB powered 240z could be a good option aswell. There seems to be a ton of good 240z's around (another good thing about the CA weather).

Another option is to go diesel. Diesel vehicles are not currently required to meet smog. Hence the big turbo options available for the duramax/powerstroke/cummins engines. Also guys take old VW diesel cars and switch them to gas powered. The VIN is still registered as a diesel so there are no worries there.

Or register it out of state where there are no stringent regulations.

It is also possible to get dodgy smog certs.

Alot of the boutique cars (ariel atom) come in through a loophole for small manufacturers. I think these cars are not resticted by smog also.

At least by modifying an older car it is all above board and not dodgy. No WOF or certs which is cool. Tube frame homebuilt cars are no worries, just weld in some chassis rails (or similar) from an older car and it is all good.
[quote]
oh yeah, of course there's always plenty of loopholes. Wink

just a lot of the stuff i see on a few of the US-centric forums basically says if the engine was never federalised, you're shit out of luck.

My mate swapped a GTI-R with dead motor for a 510 Datsun haha.
Has L20B stoked to 2.2 and twin dellortos
Just had a freshen up but is running a little rough due to a doggy igtn, once he gets MSD and dyno tune he reakons he should get 200Hp at the treads......

I agree. I am not a fan of the mixing and matching of brands. Nissan product deserves a nissan engine.

97 Series7 rx7

Not to much done to it yet, still running standard 13bt rew, only mods so far are the twin k&n pod filters, mazdaspeed struts, mazdaspeed gauge cluster, hks exhaust and a very heftly alarm and gps tracking so I can actually take it out during summer and leave it parked up :p

going to see some guys this weekend about wiring up some GReddy gauges on the a-pillar and apexi AVC-R boost controller. Hoping to get some new 18-19" dishes for it sometime in January Smile

I'd loooove to do a batmo. For the purchase price it's definitely in the bracket for my next car but rotories are just. too. risky!
[quote]
expensive to run, especially the rate they burn through gas but the rx7 is garaged for 6 days of the week and I just use the skyline as a daily driver. everyone seems to be scared of them because they are going to "break"..you shouldn't really have any issues with them unless you're gonna start porting them

Vehicle: 1986 m325i e30 BMW

Powered by: s50b32 3.2ltr M3 evo / M-coupe engine running a GT42 (I think at this stage) running around 18psi street and 22-25 drag. This will make around 600-650rwhp

Body: e30 m3 panals / bumpers, BBS LM's

Underboady: Full 5 lug conversion and m-coupe trailing arms, half shafts, M-coupe LSD Diff, M-Coupe gear box

here are some links of an M-Coupe (different car same running gear and its heavier Wink ) doing a run with our setup.

Progress: Ordering all the suspension and drive train bits. Had the engine / gearbox blah for a week, its now heading down next week to the engine builder. Ordering all the pistons (J.E Low comp forged) and Pauter rods over the coming month.

Here is what it will pretty much look like when done (colour, wheels and all)

[quote]
yo nem,
how hard is it to get your mitts on the m3 panels??

just curious.

Maybe easier to start with an m3 shell?

finding one of them is most likely harder and if you found one as clean as what he's got now you really wouldn't want to molest it imo.

Fresh off the aircraft from germany Very Happy

m3 would cost exactly the same to do. and we would still have to: right hand drive convert it (10k in steering and dash) change the rear drive train to this shit (we have in that picture) the cost would be the same .. and as kris said .. you just dont remove an s14 outta an m3 .. its not cricket

Our will look exactly the same apart from the rear window frame and raised boot .. which im still deciding on ...

330mm x 35mm 6pot fronts arrive next week in from the US and we now have the 315 x 20mm rears Very Happy and the adapters where made up in the states too .. they just landed today .. brendons pickin em up now from customs.

Here is my car which was stock six months ago, been in the shop for the past 4 months.

The motor before it went it:

Detail of that stage of work:

Removed the engine, gearbox and other associated parts e.g. radiator, pipes, wiring, powersteering, ac, exhaust, drive shafts etc. Separated the gearbox and sent for repair, replaced the main bearing and serviced the syncro's and replaced the seals.

Stripped the engine, stripped the head, cleaned and machined the head. Machined the valves with a three angle grind for better flow, also fitted new valve steam seals and new chomoly heavy duty valve springs and retainers for more reliability at high RPM.

Fitted block guard to stop cylinder liners moving around under high boost.
Cleaned and machined block .5mm oversize for larger forged pistons. Machined top of block for better gasket seal.

Measured crank for correct size, big ends needed machining oversize, main bearings polished. Reassembled block with the new JE .5mm forged pistons and Eagle forged H Beam rods with new rings, bearings, seals and gaskets.

Refitted head to the engine with new head gasket, rocker cover gasket, inlet and exhaust gasket. Refitted cams with new seals and set valve clearances. Had flywheel skimmed and clutch made to heavy duty cover for better clamping pressure and a carbon Kevlar full face clutch plate for better driveability and grip.

Replaced water pump and cam belt as well as power steering and alternator belt. Fitted new intake plenum for better flow, had rocker cover powder coated red. Reassembled all other engine parts and refitted to car.

Fitted and wired up MSD ignition system, fitted and plumbed up fuel pressure regulator.

Here's my money pit.

1982 Datsun 1200 Roadstar Ute. Originally running a 68Hp A12 single carbed beast.

From there , things went a little pear shaped. We decided to take the engine out to install some extractors and do some mild porting to the heads... well , that stopped rather quickly. Someone then suggested I drop an SR20Det into it, after pricing the necessary parts through work , I quickly decided against that idea.

So , the truck sat for a month , with no motor , and me with little motivation.

Until one day... I was talking to a mad ass colleague of mine , who suggested an engine... to which I laughed... there's no way it'll fit. He assured me it would... I just had to think outside the square.

So , I went home , did some measuring , and the next day .... had the engine secured and paid for. That Friday , it sat at home...

What the hell had I started?!

A Lexus V8 .... all shiny and new.
So that , coupled to a KnightSports gearbox adaptor , with a W58 at the ass end. It should be weapon.

So that was the engine installed , so now it was on to the suspension and steering. Well , that was more difficult than you'd expect. Nothing bolts straight in , and as we wanted to do things right, we spent the next month trying to find something that would do the job... enter the bling.

( These are actually Series 4 RX7 Circuit Racing Adjustable Platforms ) , they're made by a company called BT Racing from the States. Awesome stuff.

That's about as far as we've got so far , at the moment we're fabricating a new crossmember, moving bottom arm mounts , and trying to find a Power Steering rack to slap in , and then we're away laughing.

Very Happy

( Sorry about the long post )

What it currently looks like Sad

Currently having a bit of work done to the wheels and also to the brakes (just a freshen up really, nothing more)... not really got the cash to make it any faster at the moment, but it's bloody fast enough for me as it stands... I want to invest some more time in learning to drive it properly, and when my new tyres arrive from the UK (FINALLY!) I want to see if I can start extracting better laptimes from it Smile

um, kinda .. the engine is in being ripped apart at the mo .. checking everything (mainly big end bearings and the crank is 100%.

From here it will be put back together and placed into the car .. then up to the fabricators.

The actual cars drive train / brakes / suspension is all done now . and we have been driving it around making sure everything is 100% around the phase 1 section of the build (which it has thankfully)

Have taken ownership of two! sets of BBS LM wheels. 9.5 rears and 8.5 fronts.

Not much else from that ... I have been doing some minor mods to my other BMW .. uprated sway bars, full supersprint stainless exhaust system and coupe seats (still awaiting re-leathering).

I am always adding to this. It's living in Chch atm, and im in Aucks, lwil move it up here once I get somewhere safe to store it. I am currently designing a full pc controlled touch screen dash with interactive menus etc, 2x10 inch Widescreen LCD touchscreens then going to get my engineer to help me work out a fuel injection system I can change on the fly.

Its a Mark 5 cortina that has an 8 point rollcage in it to make it hard. It runs a 355 Smallblock chev with crower steel race crank, Manley rods (I think), blower pistons, Dart 2 heads that have been flowbenched to 850 normally aspirated HP, roller rockers and lifters, and a custom cam. The supercharger is a 6-71 and it has dual 600 holleys on it (looking at fuel injection though). Trans is a turbo 350 atm, full manual shift kit and a 2500 stall converter. the diff is just an 8 inch but the car is very light so I have yet to spit one out. It was dynoed at 812HP at 5800RPM.
