Another Orcon Connection Story.

Impressed.. ... so far.

Rang up to get Orcon connected in the new place yesterday. A representative rang my flatmate back to tell him they had recognised that we were a long term customer and that we were to recieve priority connection.

Also the guy gave my flatmate his email / phone number to contact personally in case of any issues rather than the helpdesk.

If things run smoothly from here on in (and the connection is a good speed / ping like our last one) then I'll be recommending Orcon again.

They didn't realise it but they actually only had a week before we were planning on calling XNet anyway.

What's their plan/pricing like?
For once in their life Telecom Retail have good plans again - $50 for ADSL2, 10Gb is like a dream from them!

Distinct lack of complaining and stories of ineptitude ITT.

Pricing was always good, however their plans have changed from what we were on. It would be great if we could stick with our old plan.. something like $80 for 30gb but I don't think so. Think its about half that now. $80 for $15.

Theres been a few stories like that around so maybe they are dealing with it

Their ADSL2+ business plan has prioritised traffic, a phone line with great rates, free local calling, call waiting, caller id, free web domain, 50gb traffic.. and more for $125+gst or so.

Not bad for Internet+Phone line.

interestingly, neither of the two different orcon connections i have access to will allow me to torrent tonight. not that they are slow, they are totally timing out and not even starting.

multiple trackers, including legitimate ones (like VMware appliance site)


are there any ISP's that don't lick taint?

oh look, midnight hits and off they go. see now, if they actually admitted they were restricting traffic types, i probably wouldn't care so much....

They're messing with their international shaping hard I reckon... For the last month i've struggled to get more than 1Mbit per file download, regardless of how many concurrent HTTP connections you make to it at the same time.

Which makes it hard to download anything legitimately on my "ADSL2+" connection which might as well be a ~2004 Xtra "broadband" connection.

Hence my other threads about international. I dont care if I have to pay another $50/mo, I want decent international bandwidth!

Now I seem to be able to get about 2.5Mbit... which hopefully means they're shaping the fuck out of you cunty torrent downloaders. They really need to up their bandwidth tho

Hrm, I havent seen their Single Office+ before... *resolves to call Mark and see if that plan has different shaping/bandwidth profiles

local stuff i can max out or 16 odd mbit quite easily in most cases. international is always going to be a different story tho, but at non-peak times i can certainly get it up there.

and we're on single office and yes they claim it has prioritised traffic, it does seems slightly better than the standard plan we were on before, but with the amount of grief we've had it's hard to tell.

(once torrents did start working, i was able to max out the line happily)

Dunc seems to think it's a different bandwidth pool, have sent the email to change, will see how it goes.

I'd expect torrent stuff to be shaped out of existence on a business plan.

De-prioritised like they should be, sure. Out of existence, no. I've listed a perfectly legitimate business use case already.

As I said, we've been on both. Hard to tell much difference between the two apart from having _slightly_ better support.

Just switched online here at work now too, as it works out cheaper for 150GB data than it does on standard plan for 100GB data.

Mmmmm.. two weeks is ok. Still need to test the connection speed.

At least they communicated effectively throughout.

Speedtest results better than my last place, also ping exceptionally better in practice and on speedtest.
