Anyone seen the state of the cars under the new aero regulations? My God they look ugly. New rear wings have to be about 20% narrower than last year and front wings allowed to be about 20% wider.
BMW Sauber F1.09

Ferrari F60

Also, FYI, a left-right comparison of the 2009 and 2008 Ferraris. (Holy CRAP!)

Ahhh... the legendary Tyrrell P34. Imagine how good it would be now if you could have six wheels??

Some of the cars have come out alright looking. The Mclaren and the Williams in particular.

The Renault is just damn hideous though, and they just made 100 people redundant to boot.

The main issue it the out of proportion front and rear wings, they ruin the balance of the car.

If the rear wing was similar to last years I imagine the cars would look a lot nicer.

This year could be very interesting with how teams handle the new regs. Ferrari seem to be behind at the moment, but they will probably sort it out before Melbourne. I'm hoping that Mclaren leads the pack and Williams close behind.

Seeing the new, wider, front wings from above as here in the F60... makes me wonder how many wings will get knocked off during races this year...

Here is my issue with the extra wide front wings.

We have these new regulations to promote overtaking and yet this front wing if anything is going to increase driver reluctance to attempt a move (as if the Stewards last year weren't off putting enough).

First of all, simply the new wings naturally are bigger and more likely to get tangled up.

But something that not everyone has cottened onto yet is that there are moveable parts on these new front wings that have increased the time it takes to change a front wing from around 10 seconds to a massive 40 seconds!

So if you lose one of these massive wings you are almost going to be a lap down in just getting the new one on.

I wonder though.. surely it'd be easy to design a simple servo activated system which plugs in automatically when a new wing it attached? I mean - considering the other design level they are used to that should be easy as... No?

You would think so wouldn't you.

Perhaps they are complaining as a bargaining tool, or perhaps there is something more complicated about it that we are not seeing.

I always like F1, just didn't really follow it properly

anyone keen to go to Melbourne for a weekend for this?

I think I could seriously consider this

Simple solution, get rid of wings altogether, and mid engine while they're at it, go back to this:
