Jackson's Tintin Scores Big in Europe
The Adventures of Tintin, the first of at least two planned films being made in collaboration by Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson, has delivered big results at the box office after its opening weekend in European markets.
Box office records were broken in France where the film opened a clear number one with estimated box office takings of $21.5m USD, the largest ever opening for an original film from Hollywood.
In the UK the film fared similarly well with estimated box office takings of $10.7m with some results still to be reported. The result makes it the second biggest opening of the year behind the final installment of the long-running Harry Potter franchise.
The Adventures of Tintin took in an estimated $55.8m across the 19 European markets in which it was released.
The film, which has been brought to life by the Oscar winning team at Weta in Wellington, has received glowing reviews from European media.
Express.co.uk says Spielberg has delivered his “most rousing, rip-roaring family friendly entertainment in years.”
Film bible Empire described the movie as “action-packed, gorgeous, and faithfully whimsical”. While the front page of France’s Francophone Le Soir labelled it “a pure jewel”.
The Adventures of Tintin opens in New Zealand on Boxing Day with distributor Paramount Pictures saying they expected it to be the must-see movie for holiday audiences.
