Australia’s #1 DJ – AJAX hits our Shores this Saturday 15th March at Code. We caught up with the man himself to see what all the fuss is about.
A lot of Kiwis are looking forward to you debut in NZ as the sound you play is only recently become introduced into NZ – tell us a bit more about what the style you’re playing at the moment and your sets.
Hmm its always hard to put my finger on styles, I guess I would say I lot of re edits and remixes of 90’s Acid House/ Rave, Baltimore Club, Fidget and Ghetto Tech. If I am feeling particularly kinky I drop it down to hip hop here and there, but mostly its twisted party jams width a dash of rave.
Its festival city, there seems to be a festival every weekend with massive lineups. It’s getting to the point where I look forward to stripping it back and getting intimate in da club. There are a heap of hot young djs like Ooh ee, Wax Motif etc and loads of really talented young producers like Act Yo Age, Miami Horror and Bagraiders who keep the scene fresh and keep me on my toes. Yeah it’s vibrant and there is a lot of overseas interest but because of our small population it can be inconsistent.
Last year you toured Europe correct? How was it? Plans to go back there?
Well I have a Fabric residency in London which I brown nosed and groveled for, and I play at Showcase or Paris Paris in Paris every time I head over so I know I am always going to have two slamming gigs. I have been about 4 times and its been getting better and better with each trip. You really have to earn you stripes as your still viewed as a colonial. I am going over in about 4 weeks to play Death Disco in Scotland, Monkey Knife Fight in Bristol and Bloggers Delight in Camden as well so I have really been working on my act as these are some of the top places to play so I want to be well prepared. I only hope I don’t lose my passport again as it forced me on my second trip to cancel Ibiza, France and Sweden. Dumbass
We hear you’ve recently started up your own record label, ‘Sweat It Out’, how’s that going?
Yeah we have just had our first release, Gameboy Gamegirl’s Golden Ghetto Sex Ep and within a week it went to number 1 on Beatport most downloaded electronica chart. The best thing is that the second single is number 3, so we are all very excited. I mean I probably won’t make any money for a year but I love doing it so what the hell, as long as my artists get a few pennies. Sweat It Out is a labor of love but I dig getting excited about releasing top tracks…it’s like giving out presents.
It was really just a bunch of mates who wanted to party and get silly and take the seriousness out of clubbing. God knows what a monster we created. First a club for degenerates, then a dj act made up of degenerates, The Bang Gang fanzine “Fagazine†shocked people silly next! People hated us and still do, its why we put on our own parties. Now with our famous podcasts, T shirt line and Bang Gang Twelve Inches record line our tentacles can reach much further so we don’t care if Sydney hates us, were big in Japan!
If you were stuck in an Igloo in Antartica with nothing but a turntable which 3 records of all time would you choose to have with you?
Ice T – Colours
Vanilla Ice – Ice Ice Baby
And of course anything by Ice Cube.. I hate Snow Patrol
Top tunes at the moment?
Well I have the concentration span of a flee on Zanex so all the new stuff Crookers is doing is fresh, Bart B More remixes always get a look in as do my local favorites Act Yo Age.
Finally, what’s one of the weirdest / strangest experiences you’ve had whilst playing in all your years deejaying?
That I have managed to ever hold down a relationship for more than a month.
Thanks for your time – We all look forward to hearing you on the 15th @ Code !
Looking forward to it! Soane taught me how to Dj when he used to live over here so if you don’t like the way I roll blame him hahahaha
