ONELOVE is this Saturday @ Toto, so we thought we'd catch up with the man himself Andy Murphy, Melbourne Onelove & Stereosonic resident who will be gracing our the 2nd time only for a quick chat.
ANDY MURPHY INTERVIEW
A lot of Kiwis are looking forward to ONELOVE this Saturday and only your second appearance here correct?
Yes this is only my second appearance, but last year was one of the best legs of the tour for “Smash Your Stereo” and I can’t wait to get back. I hope everyone is ready to party, as I know I am!!
Tell us a bit more about what sound you’re into at the moment and what to expect from yours and the Onelove sound?
My sound is Big Room house, tech & electro with elements of party & mash up thrown in for good measure.
Definitely expect to have a good time and be ready to party.
Australia seems really hot with Dance Music at the moment – what’s the scene like over there at the moment?
The scene is really strong and always growing. You can always find something open and something to do with good music. You can also find all different varieties of electronic music on almost any given night.
Coming into summer we are also coming into festival season, and the most exciting thing about that is Stereosonic, which I am on board for the national tour. Last year was Melbourne only and defiantly the best festival of the season, this year I can’t wait to take the party all over Australia.
Where in the world has your DJ’ing taken you and your highlight gigs of all time?
I have been lucky enough to do quite a bit of travel for my djing, Last year I did a 32 city national tour for “smash your stereo” & i haven’t stopped travelling Australia ever since. Ive also been overseas, playing gigs in Dubai, south Korea, Singapore, New Zealand, Bali , New York, Los Angeles & Miami. My favourite gig of all time would probably be playing at Din Mak , steve aokis night at cinespace in Los Angeles earlier in the year, or at the dj’s aint rock stars parties in Miami. Last year Stereosonic was also definitely a highlight.
We hear you’ve been dabbling in a bit of production, how’s that going?
My production is really starting to take off, I currently have two projects on the go “Citylife” which is a big room house sound & also “NightCorps” Which is more of an indie thing, sounding similar to Soulwax, chemical brothers & daft punk. My latest track Citylife – San francisco is currently at number 10 on the Australian club charts, with some great remixes from Fred Falke, Carl Kennedy & the D.O.N.S . Stay tuned for the city life remixes of Jason Herds new track “I feel good” & Carl Kennedy’s new one.
How did your involvement with Onelove begin?
It started 3 years ago, I was put on to play the early shift 9 – 12, and just worked my way up. Before that I was playing at Melbourne’s Family@ seven.
If you were stuck in an Igloo in Antarctica with nothing but a turntable which 3 records of all time would you choose to have with you?
Daft punk – Da funk
Armand van Helden – You don’t know me
Michael Jackson – Thriller (would have to be the whole album though)
Top tunes at the moment?
Anything by MGNT , so hot right now, in particular the Soulwax mix of kids is Rocking!
Citylife – San Francisco , hehe guess I have to say that one.
MSTRKRFT – Bounce ( Mansion remix)
Fake Blood – Mars vs music sounds better then you = mars sounds better than me
Finally, what’s one of the weirdest / strangest experiences you’ve had whilst playing in all your years deejaying?
Ahhh couple of years ago now, was wearing ugg boots in the booth, have no idea why, anyways I slipped on a record sleeve & dislocated my knee. I actually proceeded to finish my set on a seat, then went straight to hospital, and had a brace and crutches for 4 weeks. The only way I was able to finish my set was due to the amount of vodka I had drunk.
Thanks for your time – We all look forward to hearing you this Saturday @ TOTO!
