2011 the year of Adele in the New Zealand music charts

UK songstress dominates RIANZ charts, while Six60 flies the flag for Kiwi music
The New Zealand year in music belongs to UK singer Adele, who dominates the 2011 end of year charts.

The 23-year-old Londoner topped the Albums chart with her sophomore album “21” reaching the #1 Album spot on seven separate occasions and setting a new record of 26 non-consecutive weeks at the top. So great was Adele’s chart impact in 2011 that her debut album “19” also made its NZ chart debut – three years after it was released.

“21” also contains two of the year’s best-selling singles. “Someone Like You” was the third best seller of 2011, with “Rolling in the Deep” right behind at #4.

Top single spot goes to US group LMFAO, whose “Party Rock Anthem” spent 11 weeks at #1 while Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera, with “Moves Like Jagger”, claimed the #2 singles spot. Incidentally, “Party Rock Anthem” was the fourth-longest running #1 in New Zealand chart history.

Kiwi acts
Dunedin-formed Six60 proved to be the most successful local chart act of the year. The debut album “Six60” finished the year – rather fittingly – at #6 in the 2011 Top Albums chart after topping the charts for two weeks in 2011. The album also spawned three Top 10 singles: “Don’t Forget Your Roots”, which was 2011’s top-selling single by a New Zealand artist and reached #10 in the year-end charts, “Rise Up 2.0” and “Only To Be”.

Aucklander Dave Baxter of Avalanche City proved you could become an overnight success with his debut single “Love Love Love” reaching #1 on release and #14 in the 2011 Top 20 Singles chart.

2011 also marked the return of the Maori balladeer, as Patumahoe-based country singer Dennis Marsh reached #1 with his album “Maori Songs” in April and #9 in the end of year album charts. Veteran singer John Rowles also makes the Top 20 end of year chart with his album “Hits and Love Songs”.

In May, RIANZ announced Hayley Westenra’s album Paradiso broke the record for the local artist with the most #1 albums to their name, making her the most capped New Zealand solo artist and the most capped New Zealand woman.

RIANZ Chart Manager Phil Matcham says there have been some fascinating trends this year.

“The Singles chart has seen the number of #1 debuts more than doubling on 2010 and we’re also seeing longer chart runs by singles artists.”

“On the album front, we’ve seen more albums charting than any other year, with specific sales spikes following events such as Parachute and the Big Day Out in January and most recently the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards in November and the Foo Fighters this past week.”

New-look chart
In November, RIANZ launched a new-look online home for the Official Top 40 Chart, www.nztop40.co.nz. The site carries user-friendly chart facts and the ability to see, preview and buy individual tracks and albums.

With New Zealand musicians making such an impact in the Official Top 40 Chart, weekly New Zealand artist Top 20 singles and album charts were also introduced.

Phil Matcham says the aim has been to create an interactive home for the Official Top 40 Chart.

“We wanted somewhere where music fans could visit each week to listen to and watch their favourite music, share their experience with other music fans through social media and buy singles and albums.”

“Just over one month in, we’ve already seen a noticeable difference in the number of people who are using the site to purchase music and discover new artists.”
